Tour of Flanders

Join us in riding the Tour of Flanders in 2017

The Tour of Flanders is our favourite cycle race and is one of the best sportives that we have ridden. It's hugely popular and sold out of 16000 entries in 2016.

We will be staying in the beautiful World Heritage City of Bruges, which is where the Tour of Flanders starts on Sunday 2nd April. Bruges has lots to offer, whether it's culture you want, the famous Belgian beers or top quality restaurants. It really is one of our favourite places.

Tour of Flanders Sportive

Tour of Flanders cycling trip

The pro Tour of Flanders race starts in Antwerp in 2017 and the full sportive follows the route that the pros will follow on Sunday. Our trip however, is a little less arduous, starting in Oudenaard with a choice of either 75km or 130km routes. Due to the distance between Bruges and Antwerp and then Antwerp to Oudenaard, we cannot take any riders wishing to complete the 230km or 180km routes as we will not be able to get riders to both start points in time.

We will take the coach to Oudenaard, which is about an hour away from Bruges and start there. This is where the vast majority of riders will start from. There is a choice of riding either 130km or 75km routes, both of which take in the most famous climbs - or bergs - that the pros will race on Sunday.

The sportive is very well organised but extremely busy - especially on the first couple of bergs before the crowds disperse a bit.

There will be 2 feed stations on the 130km route and if you are used to British sportives, then be prepared for a smaller choice of food. Bananas and waffles tend to be the main staple so if you want more, make sure you carry some with you.

Once you have ridden the course and finished at the sportive finish (not the Pro finish line) you will be given your souvenir and can make your way back to the bus, which will take you back to Bruges for a well earned shower and rest!

We should point out that early April can be quite cold in Flanders so please ensure you bring extra clothes to put on for when you finish the ride. You may be waiting a while for others to finish.

Itinerary 2017

Friday 31st March:

We will leave Bristol by coach / minibus - depending on numbers - at 9am. Pick up point will be at Ashton Gate Stadium. After travelling to Dover, we will catch the 1pm ferry to Calais, arriving at approx. 2.30pm local time.

The journey to our hotel in Bruges should take no more than 1.5 hours so we can expect to be in our rooms by 4.30pm.

The lovely Hotel Adornes in Bruges is situated just 5 mins walk away from the town centre and main square so is ideally located to take in the many sights and entertainments that Bruges has to offer.

As people's tastes vary in food, we will not be arranging dinner in the evenings because we can never please everyone. However, we know Bruges very well and we are happy to recommend a range of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets.

Saturday 1st April:

An early breakfast will be followed by a 7am departure for Oudenaard for the start of the 75km and the 130km rides. *Please note that we are unable to transport any rider wishing to ride the full 230km or the 180km routes which both start in Antwerp.

All rider numbers and timing chips etc will be collected by us in advance so you will just need to attach them to your bike and rock up and ride!

Once everyone has finished their ride, we will take the coach back to Bruges where we will spend the evening.

Sunday 2nd April:

As the pro race starts in Antwerp this year, we will not go to see the start of the race as we have when it started in Bruges.

We will take the bus back to Oudenaard where you will have a choice of staying in town to watch the finish and seeing the race on big screens or taking a shuttle bus to Oude Kwaremont - one of the bergs that the riders will climb 3 times. If you go to Oude Kwaremont, you will still be able to see the race and finish on the big screen set up there. Staying in Oudenaard will give you the opportunity to visit various stands, food and beer tents and generally enjoy the race day activities - oh and you will get to see the riders pass through the town and then finish there later in the day.

After the finish we will take the coach back to Bruges for our final evening in town.

Monday 3rd April:

We will leave Bruges at 9am in order to get to Calais for the return Ferry at 12.00. We will arrive in Dover at approx. 12.30pm and hope to be back in Bristol by 4pm.
