Northern Spain Cycling Trip

Join us for a spectacular trip around the Picos national park.

Based in two centres both of which are on the coast. We have planned an amazing week of riding including some stupendous climbs, La Vuelta classics and stunning gorges. Quite simply this breathtakingly savage landscape will amaze you!

This is definitely a “sporty” trip with some tough days riding but we have planned so that all of the rides can be cut short if you don’t feel that you want to ride the whole route every day.

After transfer from Bilbao airport we arrive in San Vicente De La Barquera where we will spend the first three nights of the trip.

We can already see the mountains that await from this pretty coastal town but before tackling them we can explore and take in the historic local buildings, head to the beach or enjoy a drink in one of the many harbourside bars.

We will stay for three nights here. Our riding will take us inland to the high peaks of the Picos de Europa and will include the famous Deva Gorge, where you can even cycle beneath rock overhangs at times on our way to cultural local centre Potes.

From there we have then planned some fantastic, arduous climbs that are on excellently surfaced roads with little traffic. Cycling here really is a pleasure!

There are famous climbs aplenty here, including the Fuente De where a certain Alberto Contador took the lead and won the Vuelta ahead of Joachim Rodriguez back in 2012.

We will visit stunning valleys and stop at the many lookout points. You will need to stop to take it all in!

From San Vicente, on transfer day we will ride our Queen stage, inland to the base of the feared Covadonga. We will ascend steadily, stopping for pics at the top before passing over and dropping down to La Robellada.

We then continue descending back towards the coast where we will stay until the end of the trip. This time in Llanes.

This day will be 135km and 3400m climbing, did we say stunning? Yes. Did we say easy? No.

Back in 2014 Cyclist magazine did an in depth article championing this area calling it “Spanish Classic”. Thankfully nobody reads it and it’s still almost unspoilt for our benefit.

Once in Llanes we can catch our breath and can enjoy the seaside again. Another 3 days of hard cycling await, with equally awesome climbs. But the option is there to recover and take a shorter coastal route if you prefer.

A celebration banquet on our final Saturday evening will be followed by transfers back to Bilbao for the flights home.

This trip is for the more discerning cyclist that can see beyond the Alps or Dolomites and wishes different adventures on quiet roads elsewhere. You won’t be disappointed!

Most days we will cycle between 70-90 miles and climb on average 3000m each day. Options to take shorter flatter routes are available if you wish for an easier ride.

Our usual level of care and attention goes should go without saying. We want you to enjoy yourselves as much as possible.

Price includes hotels, breakfast and evening meal. Also transfers to and from Bilbao airport and between hotels where required.

It includes a supporting vehicle to resupply on the road alongside 2 outriders actually helping and guiding around the routes. They will also help with any minor mechanicals if needed.

What’s not included: flights, lunchtime food, energy products and evening drinks with dinner?
