This is your chance to ride a fully supported route up the highest road in Wales - Gospel Pass
The Granfondo route starts at Marlwood School, Alveston, near Bristol. The ride will start at 8.45am
Marlwood School is ideally situated in a quiet, rural area with instant access to the route that all riders will take to reach Aust and the Severn Bridge.
After leaving the school, you will join the B4661 which takes you directly to the Severn Bridge, which you will cross to go to Chepstow.
After passing through Chepstow, you will take the beautiful road towards Raglan. The road starts with a climb up to the village of Devauden before dropping back down on a beautiful road that undulates all the way to Raglan.
After leaving Raglan, you will head towards Abergavenny on the B4598, running parallel to the A40. This is a pleasant stretch of road with little traffic.
Just before reaching Abergavenny, you will join the A40 for about 1 mile as you head into town.
Near the centre of town you will reach your first feed station, situated next to the Bus Station. Decent Public toilets are very close to the feed station location. After passing through the town, you will now head north on the Old Hereford Road, taking you into the Black Mountains. The road climbs continually for 25km out of Abergavenny, eventually taking you over the Gospel Pass at a height of 550m before dropping you back down off the mountain just before Hay on Wye.
You will now head back towards Monmouth on a quiet, undulating road for about 40km with a few short, sharp climbs to keep you working. After approx. 15km you will reach the village of Longtown. Here you will find the Longtown Village Hall, which is the location of the second feed station. You are able to use the toilets in the village hall if you need to.
Once you have passed through Monmouth, you have another lovely climb up to Trellech in store for you. 3km long but with plenty of bite, this climb gives you a fabulous view of where you were riding an hour or two earlier in the Black Mountains.
The final feed station will be located in Trellech Village Hall. After leaving Trellech you will ride along the ridge to Devauden where you will be rewarded with another fantastic, swooping descent back towards Chepstow and the Severn Bridge.
Once you cross the Severn Bridge back to England, you will ride towards Tockington then climb the short, stingy Old Down Hill before turning towards the school and the Start / Finish and some well earned Black Rat cider and a hot pasty.
The Granfondo route is 166km long and has 2474m of climbing.
